GO NAPSACC

At some point this month I was in a training called Go NAPSACC . The idea of the training is that you look at what you’re already doing to help the children be more healthy, assess your program, and then set goals to make changes. A few years ago I served almost completely whole foods on our menu. I still think we serve very healthy meals but the meals have definitely increased in additives and fat.

I did the self-assessment and set a couple goals for us to reach by February 11. One of them is that I enthusiastically role model eating healthy foods at every meal and snack time. Not sure how I’m going to get enthusiastic about celery but I’m going to make an attempt. I do almost always sit with the kids now to eat but quite honestly since I’m constantly watching carbohydrates- I rarely eat what they are eating. We do talk about my food and why it is different.

Some other goals Go NAPSACC helped me set during my assessment is to share educational materials with families about why it’s important for parents to role model healthy eating at home, and to update my parent handbook and policies and put this commitment in writing.

I absolutely am committed to promoting a healthier lifestyle and eating habits for our children. I feel like I constantly battle with my own healthy or unhealthy eating habits. I do not want that for our kids.

Yesterday I introduced sugar snap peas and today roasted squash.

Here are some common sugar content values of food children eat often .

Graham Crackers (2 sheets)– 8 grams or 2 tsp

Cereal Bars– up to 18 grams or 4 and 1/2 tsp

Applesauce (1/2 cup)– 14 grams or 3 and 1/2 tsp

Apple juice (1 cup) — 28 grams or 7 tsp

Jelly (1 tsp)– 6 grams or 1 and 1/2 tsp

We won’t even talk about those donuts they are eating as the dive out of the car at drop off 🥺🙈

“The American Heart Association recommended that preschoolers not have more than 3 teaspoons of sugar a day and kids 5-7 should not have more than 4 teaspoons. Most kids are doubling or tripling these numbers in a day.”

This is my first step to the healthier lifestyle here with your kids – letting you know and asking you to consider joining me at home. ❤️
