Boys ( Especially boys) that are in their first year of PreK are not ready to write. They doesn’t keep me from introducing writing materials but it does signal me to take it slow and listen to clues.
As I called the children to the table today you know what I heard “ Oh no. ! I hope it’s not more circles.” I cringed knowing they were referring to the art piece we did earlier in the month. It felt like as a kid me saying “ I hope it’s not broccoli.”
It wasn’t circles it was self portraits.
Sometimes the younger boys are just not interested. Can you see what’s waiting that has his attention?
Also, look at the body stance – looks defeated and bored.
The outcome on the paper screams – I’m not ready for this yet.
We smile. Don’t make a big deal about it and move along. One day soon he’ll be ready. It’s my job to look for clues and assist.
