Color Celebration
Today we pulled out all the stops to end our color exploration.
We played Brown Bear eye spy as the song played. I could hear some of the kids counting their “finds” as they went.
We made our very own “Brown Bear” book. As I observed there were things that I found very interesting. The developmental rating skills chart gives us a range that children might or should develop certain skills in. Every child is different because of experiences or genetics so many times the skills develop at different times. Today I noticed Anna who is our youngest was so meticulous and persistent in coloring her book.
She was not interested in doing it the right color and I did not correct her. It made me think of all the times I have watched Anna pick up a room. She is very detailed. So probably her effort in her book today came from something inside her personality that causes her to want to play attention to detail. Whatever it was she did an amazing job for the youngest three.
Then you look at Nayomi who is also three. I was impressed that she had traced around her coloring before she started. My guess is that comes from having an older brother and sister and them coloring with her.
Boys fine motor skills tend to lag behind girls but today as I sat next to Kamden I was impressed. He took his time and did an amazing job on his book. I texted Holly to ask her if they’ve been practicing because his skill level had remarkably changed since last year. She said “no that they were doing some activities at home but they were activities like this.”
So she did not teach Kamden to color inside his lines. She did not condemn Kamden when he did not color inside his lines. But she did offer games that strengthen the muscles in his fingers so that when he was ready to color he could. And I would say that he definitely is ready.
Many of the other children did fabulous jobs too. If your child was one of those that basically ran some color across the book that’s OK too. As you can see from Kamden —when it’s time it will happen without coercion . When their little fingers are ready to write they will. ❤️
Now after nap we get to celebrate with this beautiful mess.
