Making the Calendar Meaningful

A lot of early childhood places do calendar time. Ask your child what they did yesterday ? Go ahead. Most don’t know the difference between yesterday , today and tomorrow yet 10 minutes of the day is wasted taking about the month , counting the days and even graphing the weather or creating number patterns on the calendar. We are little kids who have no real appointments and rain is only important to us if it causes us to miss outside time. Ain’t got no time for that nonsense. 😜

Many years ago I stopped traditional calendar time and started printing a normal calendar. I do write the numbers larger so they can be seen. I also plan a few special days to celebrate and look forward to from a national holidays list.

Once I write the days on the calendar it becomes meaningful. Children will count how many days it is until chocolate day or pepperoni pizza day. ( MATH) This method also reinforces that print has meaning.

Today we started our September calendar. I was reminded of another one if my favorite traditions on hold due to Covid. For many years we celebrated grandparents day by hosting “ Gravy and Grandparents .” So sad. I’ll be glad when “ normal “ returns. Picture of my grandbabies for reference!

Today was National Letter Writing Day. So —- we wrote a letter.

We took it to the mailbox and discovered our red mail flag is gone.

One of the children decided maybe the neighbor took it. 😳

I assured the children she is a nice lady and did not steal our red flag. I guess getting a new mailbox is on the agenda.

The children will be so excited to receive mail at home. Let them help you look in the mailbox for it.

Today was also cooking Wednesday. The children helped me make green and purple Playdoh. Here’s my favorite recipe if you want to try it at home.

2 cups bisquick
1 cup salt
2 cups water
1 TBSP cream of tartar or alum
1 TBSP oil
food coloring or kool aid
or add cocoa, peppermint what ever strikes your fancy too! ( Recipe copied from No Time for Flashcards)

Pour ALL into a MICROWAVE safe bowl and microwave for 3 mins stop and scrape and stir the bowl.

Microwave for another 3 mins scrape and stir it should be ready for kneading now – if not cook for another minute or so!

It’s been a full day. It’s good to be a kid at Bright Beginnings.
