Calming Activities

With the winter weather it’s harder for us. We cannot stay outside for long periods of time. You can’t tell a little guy that’s four or five years old that he just can’t expel energy because it’s cold. We went outside today for about 45 minutes. As soon as we got in the gate the kids were running laps. I know they are feeling the need to run faster and be louder.

And usually on Mondays if I’m being completely honest… The noise doesn’t bother me. By Thursday or Friday, I think my ears are tired. 🤣🤣

You can say Calm down. I need you to be quiet. Don’t forget voice levels one or two. But regardless what you say they have it inane NEED to be active and sometimes loud.

You’ve heard me say that in the reggio philosophy we consider the room our third teacher. Many people don’t understand that but this week I will be able to give you very solid examples of that. I can whine and complain that my kids are loud even though I know why or I can be proactive and offer activities that help them to calm down.

Today, we brought out a brand new beading project. We do beading periodically throughout the year but we have not this year as much as years past. So, I started a new beautiful winter white themed chandelier project. Fifteen glorious minutes the children sat quietly putting these beads on.

Normally this isn’t done as a group project but I let the time slip this morning and decided this would be best . My goal is that they will love it so much will choose on their own to be calm and add to our beautiful chandelier.

Tomorrow I want to add another coming activity. There’s no sense in pulling everything out of my bag at once.
