Asking The Right Questions

When working with children much of my time is spent just watching and listening . Sometimes I ask questions but I try to be careful about what I ask and how I ask it .

Asking simple questions that require a “yes” or “no” do not encourage language or conversation. Asking questions I already know the answer to is wasting my time 🤷🏻‍♀️

While kids are exploring colors I try to ask questions like “how do you think I could change this color?” I did exactly that today. We had red paint and I asked them how we could make it lighter. Eventually we got to adding white and made pink. pink.

When you see the color blue what do you think of ?

The questions we ask children matter .

This weekend I set up an Amazon playlist for colors. We checked out some of the songs on that list. I saw a few faces light up when I played “De colores. “ Hazel even interpreted some of the Spanish for us.

Our colors playlist.

I continue to be impressed with the accuracy these Littles are having with compound words and rhyming. It really amazes me.

We went outside and there was a whole new experience in the dirt pit because there was mud. A lot of fun was had . They will need baths tonight -Or maybe even this afternoon. 😬

After breakfast this morning Hinslee got a huge grin and said I’m going to push in all the chairs. I’ve never asked her to do that. She came up with the idea all on her own. It absolutely prompted me to take out our kindness Cape. It doesn’t come out a lot because I want the children to do things out of an inner desire and not a reward type thing. Hinslee didn’t even know that cape existed.

Moments like this let me know that our world will be OK because in all of our souls there’s kindness to do the right thing and help people out .
