Fostering Fine Motor Skills and Creativity with Block Play
Today, as we delved deeper into the world of block play and construction, we introduced a new element of intentional fine motor skill development. By incorporating skills that society deems important for children’s play, we create a platform to meet and exceed these expectations. Graham and Hazel, two bright minds in our group, dedicated a significant amount of time to constructing two remarkable block structures.
After tidying up the play area, I grabbed a clipboard and demonstrated to the children how to sketch a diagram of their creation. We counted the blocks, discussed their unique features such as the bricks with holes and the numbered blocks. Graham affectionately referred to these blocks as the “guards” of his structure.
Following the indoor session, we moved outside at Graham’s request, with the clipboard in tow. A group of children collaborated on building a complex structure while Graham diligently sketched and diagrammed their progress. He meticulously observed from all angles, making adjustments and additions to the structure, which he promptly included in his diagram.
The joy I experienced in that moment was indescribable. When a lesson plan crafted with purpose yields such incredible results, it feels like witnessing the magic of Jack and the Beanstalk unfold before your eyes. It was a truly fulfilling day, highlighting the power of engaged teaching and thoughtful planning in children’s learning through play.
As we eagerly anticipate tomorrow’s adventures, I am reminded that children learn best through play. The journey of exploration and growth continues, and I can’t wait to see what new discoveries await us.
