This is the time of year where worms are abundant. The fun is in finding them.
Traditional preschools might do a worm unit that looks like this –
I will admit I have been that teacher. Is it harmful ? In most cases no. Is it helpful ? Well … what is a child learning about real life from either of these two images of activities.
I will not sacrifice a child’s precious time for a checklist of activities that someone somewhere thought would be cute. Can I expand their learning to math and literacy with real life experiences with worms? You bet I can. I hope the excitement is still there next week and we will run with it.
Biggest challenge for me is not extending the learning – it’s when they want me to handle the big worms. 🥹
