We have literacy incorporated throughout our environment and our day.
We write our names on art. We find our cubbies with our names on it ( also a picture) . We have many loose parts pieces that have letters on them.
We read read and read some more
I’ve noticed when we go to get our water bottles a few of our friends are still struggling identifying their bottle. Usually 6 weeks in most children are able to identify the first letter in their name and thus find something that belongs to them. I keep reminding myself I have more threes this year than most. These things won’t come as fast with three year olds.
I am intentionally doing “activities” during the day that promote letter recognition. Now hear me say – it’s not a huge goal of mine to learn all their letters but being familiar with them is important. One way I am doing this is using our linear calendar. We are writing one letter on each day to help us remember what we did that day.
This week we have had –
C – cars / we talked about ordering new cars
C- cold – we noticed it was colder outside
L- lucy – celebrating lucy being so brave
P – pumpkins – we added pumpkins to our room
P – pizza for lunch
I think next week we will focus a lot on our names to see if we can nudge this one little milestone a little faster- with games and art of course.
