Today we talked about how it snowed this time last year. We wondered if it will snow this Christmas. Then we read a book about snow. Here in lies the problem with following expectations instead of following children and what they want to learn about. Almost ALL stories that are about Christmas have snow. As a child I remember ONE Christmas it snowed. It was like magic.
Anywho – off my soapbox and on to our story. It was about a tortoise who wanted to stay up through the winter. His mom and dad burrowed in to sleep and he snuck out. ( lesson 1)
The book was fun and allowed us to have some great conversations. The expanded language word that was introduced and repeated over and over was “ridiculous.” Don’t be surprised if you hear it. ( lesson 2 ) We also asked Alexa where turtles sleep in the winter and found out many times they burrow into the mud to stay warm and sleep. They don’t hibernate but it’s a lot like that( lesson 3 ) .
One little book – lots of spontaneous conversation and learning.
We also prepped a handprint for an ornament we will make on Friday
and completed an ornament to take home today. Hopefully they dry in time.
