Last month we spent a lot of time talking about our identity through our faces. We learned about the different features that we have and how everyone is unique. This month will be focusing on our entire body.
Children do not really know yet how to observe in depth. Our first invitation is to introduce and develop observational skills – the foundation of scientific study. By practicing the art of noticing , observing with intention, the children will pause and to have time to follow their curiosity at their own pace.
Since it would be a little weird to ask a child to sit still and have someone observe them for long periods of time we are starting to learn observation through oranges. Many different variations of an orange were placed on a platter ( and later a mirror). Children took time to look at the orange in its many forms.
Some things I heard –
“ It’s bumpy.”
“It’s bigger now.” ( magnifier )
A magnifying glass was added. They will get an opportunity to explore and observe the orange for a few days.
One of the children stayed long enough to draw what she observed.
