Today we found in on our nose. We use our nose all day long sometimes without even thinking. I asked all of the children “what is your favorite smell? What is your least favorite smell ?” Almost everyone said their favorite smell is chocolate. It made me wonder if they were confusing taste with smell. Something else that made me think that some are confusing smell with taste is the answers from the “ what do you NOT like to smell category. I got answers like broccoli and carrots. We will continue to explore.
We also had a smelling activity today. The scents were lemon , mint , coffee and pickle.
Almost all children got the lemon and the coffee. The mint ( wintergreen ) and the pickle juice were a little harder.
We read another new book today.
Do you ever think about the words that you used to talk about someone’s skin color? There actually are no children that are white or black. We are shades of those colors . I’d like to challenge you to begin to use different shades of colors when explaining someone’s skin color.
A child might have peach or rosie colored skin. A child might have coffee colored or bronze skin. A child might have light skin or chestnut colored skin. There are so many shades is skin color. Reading books like this helps us to be observant and inclusive of others .
In our preschool family we have many shades of skin color.
