Today was a special day. All the “firsts” at this age are memorable. I’m sure you remember the first time your child talked to you or the first time they walked . If this is your second year of PreK I’m sure you remember the first day from last year . Firsts can be almost as hard as “ lasts.” I think sometimes we fail to enjoy the “firsts” because we know it leads to a last. Breathe. Enjoy it all.
I don’t write lesson plans the first few weeks of school. Most of our time is spent on learning routines that make it easier on all of us the rest of the year. Of course, we are also building relationships – the foundation of my program.
Some of the routines we worked on today were taking our shoes off when we come in and washing our hands.
We wash our hands every time we walk in the door. I read a book about washing hands
and then we practiced. So many times we get upset with children who are not doing something we expect of them but on reflection realize that they’ve never been taught the skill. The first few weeks of school we teach skills and practice over and over.
If you think about all of the routines that we have- it’s a lot to take in a day. We play and put our things away when we’re finished. The bell lets us know it’s time for cleanup. We get our cots ready for rest time. We clear our plates and cups from the table after meals and snacks. It. Is. A. Lot. Your littles were successful today.
In addition to all the routines we were learning we took our first day of school pictures.
We also did our first day self portrait.(We do a new one each month.)
We played. We played so hard.
It was a good day. I am so proud of each of your little people. I am so glad you are here. ❤️
