Today the Explorers Curriculum suggested that we do a representational drawing of flowers with the children. Thankfully I had some flowers from my birthday leftover and we got busy.
I learn so much as I watch children. I watched several of them take their time making intricate lines with colors to represent the flowers and then they would take the brown and smear it all in. I wish I could read their mind and understand why. I wanted to say… “Stop it’s good now. You’re messing it up .” But that’s their job to decide when it’s good.
Also it was interesting to me that the children that just started out putting paint colors all over their paper here and there, ended up with probably the best representation of the flowers. Again, as a teacher I wanted to say “ stop… Slow down… Think about what you’re doing.” And then when it got to the end I was like “oh, I see it.”
Art for this age children is more about the process than product. As the children work through the process as their partner in learning I learn too.
