We started learning a new skill this week so I thought it would be a good time to update what we are learning through our Heggerty phonemic awareness curriculum.
We focus on eight skills: we do rhyming, onset fluency, blending, isolating final or medial phonemes , segmenting, adding to and deleting phonemes, and substituting phonemes . We also look at letter naming and language awareness.
And right now you are probably saying “ I had no idea!!!” Pictures never show all the learning taking place.
This week we started working on an onset fluency. I say “tell me a word that begins like the word ( jam)” and the children think of words that begin with the letter J. It’s not easy .
We have successfully memorized 24 nursery rhymes.
This is the one thing that I struggle with that does not fit 100% in my philosophy of teaching but I know will be beneficial to the children in kindergarten. It literally takes less than five minutes so I give in and do it.
Five minutes out of a day that is totally driven by the children’s lead.
