Our work this week is spinning mainly off the very last conversation I had on Friday with Melanie.
She looked on the wall and saw the reflections from the prisms in the window and said, “ why are the rainbows only there when we wake up in the afternoon ?”
So today we talked about why that might be true. I actually got some really good answers.
Levi – because the sun comes through the chandeliers. I was so proud of him using that word. Chandeliers are the beading projects that we do . The one we are working on now has mirrors and more clear beads- I’m hoping spreads more rainbows in a room.
Of course off of the conversation with rainbows comes a conversation about the storms last night. One of the little girl said that was just “Jesus taking a shower.”
Another child said “ no it’s not.”
Our little friend said “ yes it is!! My mom said so.”
The other child replied “ no it’s not because Jesus doesn’t use dirty water.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A third friend was listening to this conversation and said “thunder and lightning bump and they make thunder. In the thunder comes the rain – and it hits water puddles and then the sun comes up and dries it up and takes it back up.” Yes !!
And then another friend said “ yes and when you have hot air and cold air they swing around and then you get a little bit of sun and a little bit of rain- it makes tornadoes.”
So you can see when we’re working with children sometimes can be like the mouse and the cookie in the famous famous book that we all know.
It’ll be interesting to see where this investigation of “ rainbows in the afternoon” goes.
Meanwhile we are collecting data. Of course it’s important that we just wonder about it but we do want to work toward finding the answer.
I absolutely love that at our last data collection point which was noon, Dirk yelled “ we can’t see the rainbows with the light on maybe turn the light off .” Brilliant !!
