I’m not a huge fan of theme based curriculums. I think it’s much better for the children if we observe to see what they are interested in and cater what they need to learn to that . Early in the year it’s hard to find something that you can run a project on. The children are still learning routines and reconnecting with their friends . Marcy White put a new curriculum out that is meant to be loosely followed. It is called the Explorers Curriculum . It encourages children to explore their surroundings. One unit that seem to be natural for us at the beginning of the year is colors. Children love colors and art . Today we did an activity from that unit. What is your favorite color ?
When I texted a picture of this to Marcy to let her know we were using her material – in her true fashion she encouraged me to think deeper. Do moods affect the color that we choose as our favorite? Will the colors change over the year ? What if I introduced colors that are not primary like lavender or lime green? Will the children still choose the same color family. I have put it on my calendar to revisit this activity in a different way later in the year.
We also practiced glue drops today. As the children are using our materials more you can’t expect them to be responsible if you’ve never taught the skill. Today we practiced making tiny drops and large drops but no puddles. We also practiced making a straight line with the glue .
It was a really good day . When I took out the purple book this morning Elijah immediately said “oh I love this! I love rhyming !” Maybe he’ll grow up to write books Or songs ❤️
