Today the kids finished up their valentine treat for their friends. Over four days they used a different medium to decorate a small heart. Today they took a list of the children’s names and picked out a special heart for each one and glued it under their name. Theoretically the whole piece is one art by your child since all of the hearts on the page they created. But as they placed them on the page I loved hearing the thought going into their choices.
I heard “what is your favorite color?”
I heard ” I know she likes pink I’ll put this here .”
In the end it still may be something that ends up in the trash. They really aren’t that beautiful. 🤷🏻♀️ But they are a work of the heart.
Now with all of that said I would like to remind you why we don’t do these activities very often. Throughout the week it took me about an hour each day to help each child choose how they would decorate their hearts . And today it took 2.5 hours to assist them in gluing them to the paper and putting the frame together. Imagine if I was a teacher that did teacher directed crafts all day long… Some do. Today there were 2.5 hours less time for me to sing songs, read books, talk to children about their work at the easel, squeeze playdoh , hold little people in my lap, and all the other things we do every day.
Those are the things that really matter every day.
