Today we’re gonna dig a little deeper into what exactly is considered a punishment.
A punishment makes children suffer for having a problem. Ex. A little three-year-old boy cannot sit still during church or family time. Little boys of that age aren’t meant to sit still for long periods of time yet we requested and he messes up. We say ” if you can’t sit still and be quiet you will lose your Legos for the day.” Punishment.
A punishment causes children to fear of making mistakes. Many times I have seen children cringe and cry as soon as their milk spills. They are in fear of what happens next. Punishment.
Punishment relies on judgment. “You are such a bad kid. You never get anything right. You make me so angry .” Punishment.
Punishment provides extrinsic motivation to please others and avoid physical or emotional pain . Children try to always do the right thing to make sure their parents are proud of them and happy for them. It has nothing to do with fixing what the original problem was on the inside. Punishment.
Punishment focuses on what not to do. “Do not run. Do not hit your brother. Do not sass me. Do not run in the house.” Punishment.
Do any of these punishments seem familiar or resonate with you?
