The last few days of school as we gear up for our Art Show we are exploring different ways to create art. Today I pulled out an oldie but goodie from our tool belt. We plugged in an old hot plate ( I think it is from the 50s era , maybe.) After it was warm we added paper and started drawing . The feel of using the crayons on the warmer was different. The crayons “slid” smoothly across the paper . Not only is this an excellent time for adding some science concepts in but it is also a great opportunity for expanded vocabulary . We can add words like melted, smooth, glide , melting point, liquid and absorb.
What was really fun was when one child ( with the encouragement of a friend ) decided not to draw on his paper but to just add crayon pieces and let them sit. What will happen ? He ended up with puddles of colored wax that had a beautiful affect when we moved it.
Another piece of art we did today is collaborative piece. If you are new you might not be familiar with our preschool family tree. A few years ago a mom did this as a gift for me and we continue to add our colorful leaf finger prints each year . My only regret is that I didn’t have this 20 years ago. Can you even imagine.
