I have a love/ hate relationship with assessments. A developmental assessment is required of all children enrolled in an ABC program within 45 days of enrollment. I do another assessment at the end of the year because what good is the assessment without something to compare it to ? So , I hate taking the time for assessments and honestly, some of the questions are dumb, but I love seeing how much the children have grown over the year I am always amazed. We do these assessments to prove to legislators that your money ( tax payers money ) is well spent.
I do mix the WAY I perform assessments up a little. We do parts of the assessment outside, with different materials or as part of a game.
Today we hopped , skipped and jumped. They told me when their birthday was and what their full name is. Interesting fact : Simon Calvert is Simon Donkey Kong. It was about this time a few years ago that his brother decided he wanted to be called Duck TY Rainbow. Those Calverts – always keeping me on my toes.
This is math – one to one correspondence.
And then there is the learning that takes place that you don’t plan. Shadows…. Do you remember when we did a couple days on shadows ? Being able to recall information is actually a great indictor or cognitive development.
We are also still working toward our end of the year art show. Today we did a little circle collaborative art. 🙂 If you have more circles at home that have flat bottoms, please send them to school.
We danced in the rain too.
I think that offset those yucky assessments that had to be done.
